The Italian orthopaedic market has always been very dynamic and open to innovation, especially in the field of cartilage repair.
The SIOT 2009, Italian orthopaedics and traumatology association congress, which took place from 7th to 11th November in Milan, showed how this growing sector is offering new clinical opportunities and setting new trends.
On November 10, within a symposium organized by BioTissue, four experienced Italian surgeons reported about their clinical outcomes with BioSeed®-C and chondrotissue®:
Ettore Somma, MD (Rome) presented the outcomes of his long-term experience with BioSeed®-C, a chondrocyte-based graft, over 100 patients have been engrafted since 2006.
Also Andrea Fontana, MD (Milan) reported about his experience with BioSeed®-C with focus on the arthroscopic application in the hip. While debridement can be a valid solution to treat hip cartilage defects of I and II Outerbridge grade, deeper lesions of III and IV grade show superior cartilage repair after a chondrocyte transplantation.
Despite the successful clinical results with the chondrocyte-based BioSeed®-C the lecturers underlined the promising advantages of a one-step procedure based on the stimulation of the patient’s own stem cells.
In this regard Mario Brunella, MD (Rome) reported about excellent outcomes with the cell-free chondrotissue® scaffold in about 40 cases. The first application of chondrotissue® was limited to active patients older than 50. The promising results and the easy logistics encouraged though to expand the indication to young patients.
Also Alberto Siclari, MD (Biella) presented his clinical follow-up with chondrotissue® in the knee, talus and hallux rigidus. Since 2007 he has performed over 100 chondrotissue® implantations to treat knee cartilage defects of III and IV Outerbridge grade. 9 months after surgery, 10 biopsies showed excellent outcomes with hyaline-like tissue regeneration. The talus application in 8 patients with superomedial cartilage defects showed pain relief and complete functional recovery after a short follow-up. The implantation of chondrotissue® in 19 cases affected by hallux rigidus also showed very good clinical outcomes, that can be compared to the results obtained with non-biological solutions, such as prostheses.
This SIOT event set up a milestone in the fields of biotechnology. It showed large interest in biological cartilage repair solutions and offered an extensive overview of the current biological treatments.
